Down 95%, Shiba Inu Bets on Shibarium and 'Burn Portal' to Spark Recovery
Shiba Inu (SHIB) has come a long way since its meteoric rise in 2021. The memecoin, which rocketed to an all-time high of $0.00008616 after surging several million percent in months, has since seen a dramatic reversal — CoinGecko data show SHIB is down roughly 95% from that peak. The big question now: can the Shiba Inu ecosystem attract enough users to revive the token’s fortunes?
A key moment in SHIB’s 2021 rally was the high-profile intervention by Ethereum cofounder Vitalik Buterin, who was sent half of SHIB’s supply and subsequently burned 90% of what he received. That sudden supply reduction helped trigger a sharp price spike, and many in the community have since pushed for more burns. But lead developer Shytoshi Kusama has repeatedly warned that burns alone won’t restore SHIB’s value — broader adoption is essential for any sustained price recovery.
To that end, the Shiba Inu project has shifted away from being just a meme asset, rolling out real-world infrastructure aimed at utility and on-chain activity. Notable developments include Shibarium, a layer-2 network that hosts multiple applications, ShibOS to help businesses bridge into Web3, and plans for a metaverse and expanding ecosystem. These moves are designed to spur user growth and transaction demand — the kind of fundamentals Kusama says are needed for a genuine turnaround.
On the token-supply front, the team is reportedly working on a new burn mechanism — a burn portal said to be capable of destroying trillions of SHIB annually. If implemented and paired with rising usage of Shibarium and other ecosystem services, such a mechanism could further tighten circulating supply and, in theory, support higher prices.
Bottom line: Shiba Inu has transitioned from a pure meme experiment into a broader crypto project with layer-2 infrastructure and business-facing tools. While high-profile burns have historically moved the price, the project’s long-term recovery likely hinges on real adoption and sustained activity across its networks. The rumored burn portal could amplify those effects, but significant uncertainty remains.
