Yield Guild Games is winding down its Web3 game-publishing arm and laying off 35 staff as it shifts strategy toward AI, the blockchain gaming guild announced Monday.
The company said it will shutter YGG Play — its division focused on “casual degen” crypto games — citing a prolonged crypto market downturn and broader weakness in the video-game sector. YGG Play, created as a way to bring bite-sized, crypto-infused titles to nontraditional gamers, launched original title LOL Land, signed nine additional projects, partnered with the Pudgy Penguins NFT brand, and rolled out a token launchpad. The unit reported more than $9 million in lifetime revenue through Q1 2026.
Despite those early wins, the wider crypto-gaming market has been under pressure for years, with multiple blockchain games shutting down and investors largely avoiding game studios. Crypto prices have also slumped — Bitcoin is nearly 50% off its October peak — while the traditional gaming industry has seen large layoffs, including recent cuts at Xbox. Against that backdrop, Yield Guild said it decided to close YGG Play, cut 35 roles, and retire the YGG Play website, launchpad and games (including LOL Land and Waifu Sweeper) by August 1. Two titles on the platform, Gigachatbat and Ragnarok Breaker, will continue under their original developers after a transition.
“We are sunsetting our Web3 game publishing unit @YGG_Play, and 35 jobs will be affected,” YGG co-founder Gabby Dizon wrote on Twitter, adding the company will provide eight additional weeks’ pay and assistance finding new roles. In an official statement Dizon framed the move as a market-driven decision, not a judgement of the product teams: “I am proud of what this team achieved under such tough conditions… YGG's vision and mission hasn't changed.”
Yield Guild is reallocating resources toward an AI-focused strategy. The company plans to sell behavioral datasets derived from gamers’ in-game decision-making to train artificial-intelligence models, betting that player choices and patterns are valuable inputs for AI developers.
On the balance-sheet front, YGG reported a treasury of $20.6 million in Q1 2026 and said the restructuring should extend its runway to about four years. The company was one of the breakout names of the 2021 play-to-earn boom — notably supporting Axie Infinity via a scholarship program and raising funding from Andreessen Horowitz in August 2021 — but the collapse of Axie’s economy in 2022 and the broader decline of play-to-earn forced several pivots. Yield Guild shifted to building blockchain infrastructure for gaming guilds in 2024 and launched YGG Play in 2025.
YGG’s native token traded up about 4% on the day at roughly $0.023, but remains down about 84% over the past year and a staggering 99.8% from its 2021 peak of $11.17. The closure of YGG Play marks another sign that crypto-native gaming projects are rethinking business models — and increasingly looking outside pure blockchain plays for sustainable revenue.
